Last Stop! Day 21 - Portland, ME - The DRUM SHOP

October 21, 2009

This year's Vault Tour ended with our final stop at The Drum Shop in Portland. We arrived at the store to find that the guys had already set up most of our display for us – wow! Thanks guys! When the tour first started, it seemed like a long haul…but it's amazing how fast the time has gone. Everyone was a little sad today to see our tour coming to an end. Thank you to everyone who came out to the stops to meet us!

Day 19 - Marshfield, MA - SABIAN

October 19, 2009

Today we held our event at Sabian's U.S. headquarters in Marshfield, MA.We thought it would be great to have all the regular stock of cymbals, accessories and "softwear" that we keep in our warehouse available on top of all the prototypes that we have on the Vault Tour stops.

We started setting up the night before and our first challenge was getting the lathe into the warehouse. Fortunately, we have good neighbors - more than one as you'll see in a moment! The folks at ABB Concise drove their forklift over.Problem solved. We put up the cymbals in our demo room.In the warehouse, we set up tables with logo-wear, accessories, and a big assortment of items left over from various promotions over the years.

The day of the event we had another one of our neighbors, FM 95.9 WATD, on site broadcasting live. I had a great time chatting with radio personality Sam Kopper as he walked listeners through what was going on at SABIAN. WATD is an amazing organization.Radio in the U.S. today is dominated by big corporations and conglomerates. In the middle of all that, Ed and Carol Perry run an award winning independent station that focuses on serving the local community.   Mike Tocker and Chris Gleason from Daddy's Junky Music were on hand to take care of the sales. We really appreciated them supporting this event by coming out and setting up a remote sales operation.

The event is kind of a blur between radio interviews and helping customers. Customers started showing up at 1:30 and the doors opened at 2:00. Unfortunately, there wasn't time to take pics. Dave Williams was in constant motion and finally took lunch around 4:30.We wrapped up at 8 pm, tore it all down, packed it up and got ready to head to Manchester, NH.

Day 18 - Rockaway, NJ Ritchie’s Music

October 17, 2009

Hey everyone,

The drive from Harrisburg to Rockaway, NJ was quite a slog.  With temperatures hovering around freezing, the driving rain sometimes mixed with fat, wet snowflakes.  In spite of the weather, we made good time.  We rolled into the parking lot of Ritchie’s Music around 11 am.

I was impressed with Ritchie’s right away – clean, bright and laid out well.  The drum department was so precisely merchandised that I joked with the department manager, George Sigler, about having used a protractor to line up the drum sets!  There was a big, open space already cleared for us right in the middle of the drum department so we got to work unloading our gear.

As we stood in the chilly air and surveyed the damp parking lot for a place to set up the lathe and anvil, it was looking to be an uncomfortable day for Allie.  Fortunately, shop owner, Jim Riccio, was on hand and agreed to let us put Allie’s rig inside the store.

By the time we finished setting up customers were already showing up for the event. Paradiso Pizza had just delivered our order – which included 2 of the largest calzones I’ve ever seen – so there was just enough time to grab a quick slice or two.

Once the testing began, it was a non-stop wall of cymbal sounds.  It was one of our busiest days on the tour and our crew was one short so we were always on the go. Unfortunately, there wasn’t enough time to gather as many details as usual, but a few things stood out.  One customer bought a cool 22” ride with a power bell and promptly took it to Allie to have it customized on the spot. A few well-placed hammer strikes on the bow gave him exactly what he was looking for. Another customer left smiling after Allie custom hammered and lathed a set of 14” hats.  Several customers brought in their favorite cymbals to find either a complimentary sound or a replacement. Every cymbal had a history and we had a great time comparing stories and sounds.

Thanks to the George, Jim and the whole crew at Ritchie’s!  We had a great event and are glad to have you as a SABIAN Axcess dealer. Follow this link to see pictures from the event on our sabian.com BLOG!

Day 17 - Dale's Drum Shop - Harrisburg, PA

October 16, 2009

The pouring rain and cold weather didn't keep drummers away from Dale's Drum Shop in Harrisburg, PA on Friday afternoon. When we arrived there were a lot of folks already in the store, waiting for us to set-up and start the day! That's always a great sign.

The internet is a wonderful thing - thanks to a video on memphisdrumshop.com from a Vault Tour stop earlier in the tour, a drummer in Harrisburg was able to see a pair of Memphis hats that were made on site at Memphis Drum Shop. He liked them so much, that when he arrived at Dale's Drum Shop, he had Allie make a custom pair. If you want to read more about the Vault Tour from a drummer's perspective, check out his post on HarmonyCentral.com.

There was a lot of excitement in the air on Friday - we had Channel 27 Reporter Chuck Rhodes stop in to do interviews for his segment "Out and About".Check for the feature HERE later in the week!

A grade 8 student, Delaney, stopped in to talk with our product specialists for a science fair project that she is doing on cymbals. She is going to send her report to us once it is finished - can't wait to read it!!

Thanks so much to the staff at Dale's Drum Shop for hosting the Vault Tour crew - we had a great day! Also, thanks to those drummers who braved the cold and rain to stop in and hang out with us - we do all of this for you!

Day 16 - Columbus, OH - Columbus Percussion

October 15, 2009

After a day-long drive from Richmond to Columbus on Wednesday, we were ready to rock at Columbus Percussion on Thursday afternoon!

A lot of people took advantage of the rare opportunity to have craftsman Allie Cougle create a cymbal just for them. Brooke from Wilmington, OH (check out his band here: streetwiseband.com) had a custom cymbal made on site, along with Alan Slocum
who took home a 16" HH cymbal.

Kevin brought in a cymbal from home to be hand-hammered to suit his current sound - he walked away happy with his re-worked 16" AAX Metal Crash.

Coby Utterback's new cymbal is all thanks to a team effort - it was lathed by Allie Cougle and hand hammered by both Coby and Columbus Percussion employee Tomash - it sounds great!

We were joined by Bob Breithaupt in the evening, a SABIAN-endorsed clinician and jazz player who performs with the Columbus Jazz Orchestra - thanks for stopping in!

The award for most dedicated customer of the tour goes to Brendan Riley! He was at the store before we arrived, and stayed until the very end. From 1pm-8pm, Brendan tested cymbals, picked out perfect prototypes for his sound, and waited for the $100 coupon winner to be drawn. His patience paid off - at 8pm his name was randomly pulled from all of the ballots that had been filled out throughout the day. Congrats Brendan!!

Check out pics from the stop on the sabian.com blog HERE

Many thanks to Jim Rupp and his accomodating staff - it was a pleasure to work with you for the day!

Day 15 - Richmond, VA - Richmond Music Center

October 13, 2009

 Hi all,

I awoke to frost on my car Monday morning, so I was glad to make the trek to Richmond, VA for sunshine and to meet up with the rest of the Vault Team. On Tuesday afternoon we were greeted by boxes of prototypes waiting to be set-up and an awesome staff at Richmond Music Center.

We were busy all day talking with drummers, handing out free swag and customizing cymbals outside. Customers like Neal Revels and David Dechent found their perfect sound and went home happy. Jack Middleton had his AAX cymbal hand hammered and signed by craftsman Allie Cougle - an amazing experience for any drummer! Congratulations to Sean Connolly - the winner of the $100 coupon towards his next SABIAN puchase at Richmond Music Center!

Check out pictures from today's event on our blog on sabian.com

Thanks to the wonderful staff at the store who were a great help all day - we wouldn't be able to do this tour without your support!

Check out their website HERE and their Facebook page HERE.

On Wednesday we will be making the 8-hour drive to Columbus, OH for Thursday's stop at Columbus Percussion - make sure to stop by!

Day 14 - Raleigh, NC - Indoor Storm

October 12, 2009

Hi All,

Today’s Vault tour stop brings us to Raleigh North Carolina at Indoor Storm.  Barry Knain was ready for our arrival with tents outside and the local rock radio station on hand for live remotes of the event.  Drummers from all over the Raleigh area came to see our collection of more than 200 cymbals, many one of a kind prototypes.  Drummers came through all night and cymbals were flying out the door.  Dave Williams from SABIAN Canada was on hand to discuss the cymbal testing process and Allie Cougle demonstrated the art of hand hammering and lathing.

After the event we all went to Casa Linga, an amazing Italian restaurant owned by five star chef Carlo.  This is the best food in Raleigh and you must stop in if you’re in town.  Thanks to all for a great day, great food, and great times!

See you in Richmond, VA!

Day 13 - Johnson City, TN - Campbell's Morell Music

October 11, 2009

Hey gang, we’re in scenic Johnson City Tennessee (just a stones throw from Bristol Motor Speedway) for the Sabian Vault tour.  David, Bandon, Alan, and all of the Campbell’s Morrell staff did a fantastic job of getting the store ready for our arrival.  We were set up in no time and this quiet little town came alive!  Traffic was non-stop as drummers from all over came to check out the amazing assortment of prototypes.  Cymbals were flying off the hooks.  Dave Williams (Sabian Product Specialist) was with us to help everyone find that special cymbal.  Allie Cougle was set up out front to provide hand hammering and lathing demos.  He even custom made a set of hi-hats for one very happy customer.

Great store, great people, great BBQ, and great friends!  Did I tell you I have the best job in the world?  Tomorrow we are off to Raleigh to do it all again.  Check out the tour schedule and come see us.

Day 12 - Nashville, TN - Fork's Drum Closet

October 10, 2009

Our next stop was Fork’s Drum closet in Nashville, TN. We pulled up to the store Saturday morning and thank goodness there was no rain! What a great store, with tons of great drums and cymbals. Their snare drum room is amazing! After checking out all their great gear in the shop, we set up Allie out in front of the store so he could lathe and hammer away for all customers to watch him in action. We then we set up a ton our prototype cymbals inside the store for all the anxious customers to try out.  From the time we started the event until the very end, we had a constant flow of people and we sold tons of cymbals today! We even had a surprise guest stop by to see us. Sabian artist and drummer for country artist Keith Urban Chris McHugh stopped by with his drum tech Mark Arnold to say hello to everyone. In fact they had just come off the tour bus that morning from a concert in Buffalo, NY!

Overall, I thought the day went so fast because it was so busy! Before I knew it, it was time to pack up. The Sabian Crew would like to thank Gary and Melissa Forkum and their great staff for their gracious hospitality. Gary himself picked out one of our prototype crashes to bring to a gig that evening!

For pictures from the stop in Nashville, check out our blog on sabian.com.

Our next stop is Johnson City, TN

See you there!
