Born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Sergio Melo has been drumming since the age of 14. He has recorded over 500 albums in diverse styles with some of the biggest names in the world. His career began in the city of Vitoria, Espirito Santo, where he worked with local artists until 1994. It was there that he received his first big break when he was chosen by an American band to record and tour an album in the USA. While living in Texas for a year he had the opportunity to play with many well renowned musicians, including guitarist Eric Johnson. Returning to Rio de Janeiro, Melo began working with singer Danilo Caymmi, playing on two of his albums. He later joined the Paulo Ricardo band for five years, playing on nearly all of the singer's solo recordings: four albums that won 5 gold discs, 3 platinum discs and a Latin Grammy nomination for the "Best Pop Album" of 1998. He also recorded singer Ana Carolina's first album and her second and third most successful albums, "Ana Rita Joana Iracema e Carolina" (Gold and Platinum discs). In 2002 he became involved in the "FAMA" project (a musical talent show) on Globo TV, Brazil's largest television network and third largest in the world. At FAMA, he recorded 120 songs in a 3-month period during which the program released one album per week (1 Gold and 1 Platinum) -- a record for the Brazilian music industry. For over 6 years Sergio has taken part in the musical programming of Globo TV in events like "BRASIL 500 ANOS" in Paris and Brasilia and "CRIANCA ESPERANCA" (a UNICEF project that raises money for underprivileged children). Melo now divides his time between studio and stage work, and has recorded albums with artists Tim Maia, Ed Motta, Ney Matogrosso, Roberto Carlos, O Terco, Fabio Jr, Elba Ramalho, Caetano Veloso, Alcione, Ivete Sangalo, Amigos, Sandy & Jr, Daniela Mercury, Black Rio, Pepeu Gomes, and many others.
