Biography

Pedro Sá is Principal Timpanist and Head of the Percussion Section of the Petrobras Symphony Orchestra (Opes), under the musical direction of Isaac Karabtchevsky, one of the most highly regarded musical ensembles in Latin America. He was soloist in the world premiere of the Concertante for Timpani and Orchestra, written and dedicated to him, by Brazilian composer Dimitri Cervo. Previously, he was the Principal Timpanist of the Brazilian Symphony Orchestra, which he joined at the age of 16 — a rare occurrence in any professional orchestra — from 1990 to 2002. Pedro studied harmony/orquestration with Nelson de Macêdo, total percussion with Luiz D’Anunciação and Miquel Bernat, vibraphone with Arthur Lipner, atabaques with Mestre Caboclinho, cuica with Paulinho Bicolor and timpani with Jack Brennan, at the Hibert Circle Hall, Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra’s Symphonic Hall. He has a Masters’ degree in Music/Performance from Unirio and is currently he is working on a Doctorate in Music/Performance at the same university about Brazilian solo timpani repertoire. Pedro has been Professor at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro's School of Music since 2007, one the best universities in Latin America, teaching Percussion and Chamber Music, as Percussion Group Director. He is also columnist for the Modern Drummer Brazil magazine and Associate Researcher as percussion consultant in museums of musical instruments in Brazil and Portugal. With DUO SÁ de Percussão, Pedro performed at PASIC 2015, in San Antonio, Texas and gave a Symphonic Clinic-Performance at PASIC 2016, in Indianapolis, about Percussion Instruments Used by Heitor Villa-Lobos.
