SABIAN honored three more industry greats at their Lifetime Achievement Awards ceremony on Thursday, November 9th at the PASIC convention in Austin, Texas. The purpose of the SABIAN Lifetime Achievement Award is to honor and recognize people who have advanced the world of percussion. Evelyn Glennie, Doug Howard and Jamie Oldaker were the recipients of this year's award at the PASIC Convention
The first person to successfully create and sustain a full-time solo percussion career, Evelyn Glennie has defined herself as one of the world's most eclectic and innovative musicians. A disciple of the great James Blades, Glennie continually expands the possibilities of percussion with over 100 musically adventurous performances a year, many involving leading orchestras or diverse artists including Bjork, Sting, Bobby McFerrin, and Kodo. Besides commissioning works from eminent composers, Evelyn performs and records her own compositions. Her first CD, Bartok's Sonata for Two Pianos and Percussion, won her a Grammy. As did her collaboration with Bela Fleck. Her autobiography, Good Vibrations, is a best seller. And she features on TV shows ranging from Sesame Street and David Letterman, to PBS Profile. Awarded the OBE (Officer of the British Empire) for her services to music, Evelyn Glennie is relentlessly redefining the future of percussion in its many forms.
It was Jamie Oldaker's tasty drumming on Eric Clapton's hit albums 4601 Ocean Blvd., Slowhand, and There's One in Every Crowd plus classic singles including 'I Shot the Sheriff', 'Wonderful Tonight', and 'Lay Down Sally' that thrust the young drummer from Tulsa, Oklahoma, into the global spotlight. Already a reputable player, Jamie brought to Clapton's music the sense of musical authenticity the British guitar legend loved from his own stint with Delaney & Bonnie and Friends, a band that included many of Jamie's Tulsa buddies. As a first-call session player, Jamie also made music with such greats as Steve Stills, Bob Seger, Leon Russell, Peter Frampton, Albert King, JJ Cale, Phil Collins, the Bee Gees, Dave Edmunds, and British jazz-blues legend Georgie Fame. His own band, The Tractors, topped the country/pop charts on more than one occasion, while his CD, Mad Dogs & Okies, reunites him with Clapton, Cale and Frampton. A drummer with impeccable musical sense, Jamie Oldaker epitomizes the finest in contemporary drumming.
The principal percussionist and assistant timpanist of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, Douglas Howard is also adjunct professor of percussion at Southern Methodist University and a founding member of the world music ensemble, D'Drum. In 1975, after four years with the U.S. Air Force Concert Band in Washington, D.C., where he earned a Master of Music degree, Douglas joined the Dallas Symphony. A faculty member at the Aspen Music School since 1982, he also serves as principal percussionist of the Aspen Festival Orchestra, has performed with the Aspen Chamber Symphony, and since 1986 has been principal percussionist for the Peninsula Music Festival orchestra. A former PAS Board of Directors member and frequent clinician at PASIC, Douglas was a cover feature in Modern Percussionist, has recorded with the Dallas Symphony and Louisville Orchestra, and taught at Oberlin Percussion Institute. Today his students play with the Chicago Symphony, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Philadelphia Orchestra, the U.S. Coast Guard Band, and 'The President's Own,' U.S. Marine Corps Band.
