Biography

From behind his massive setup Mike Portnoy dishes out enough power to lift the crunchy riffing and odd-times excursions of progressive rockers Dream Theater into a space all their own. With influences ranging from the Beatles, the Who, King Crimson and Led Zeppelin to Rush, Frank Zappa, Genesis, Marillion, and Pantera, Mike’s solid grasp on the past coupled with his self-admitted obsession for drumming has made such an aware and capable player. Dream Theater came together while Mike and his bandmates were attending Berklee College of Music, and the group has been relentless in its pursuit of universal success ever since. Endless international touring and discs including Images and Words, Live at the Marquee, Awake, Once in a Live Time, Scenes from a Memory, and Falling into Infinity have garnered critic credibility and awe-inspired fan devotion for the band, while all-star projects including Liquid Tension Experiment and Transatlantic have taken Mike on adventures into new musical terrain. With his spirited contribution to the creative vision and energy of Dream Theater, Mike Portnoy is one of rock’s most important and influential drummers of all time.
