Speed, precision and power are his trademarks, but Marthus Skaroupka is a drummer with deep and diverse musical roots. Born Martin ?karoupka in 1981, Marthus still resides in his Czech Republic homeland, though today tours the world with renowned rockers Cradle of Filth.
Marthus credits his father, Ladislav ‘Obludárium‘ Skaroupka of the band Dogma Art, for instilling in him his dedication to and love for music. Ladislav took his son with him to his band rehearsals and concerts, which gave Martin the strong foundation he works from today. Though he took piano and vocal lessons from age 6 though 13 at L?U Brno, Marthus also wanted to play drums. At that time drum lessons were not available at any of the local music schools, so he studied privately with Prof. Cupák, a member of the prestigious Janácek Opera in Brno. At the age of 15 (1996) Marthus was accepted into Leos Janácek Conservatory, where he graduated with a major in drums and a minor in piano.
During his first year after graduating, Marthus played with several bands and recorded albums with Animal Farm and Pink Chubby Cigar. In 1997 he started playing live shows with Monestery, Scharnhorst, Pluggulp, Happy Death. He then recorded CDs with the latter two before teaming up with guitarist Ashok (Root, Equirhodont) and recording another album.
In that same year Marthus and good friend Khaablus founded the band Inner Fear, in which he was credited for all compositions, keyboards and drums. Inner fear released a demo, then in 2003 put out two more mini-CDs and three full-length albums.
Though busy with Inner Fear, in 1999 Marthus recorded a CD with Entrails, which is where he met Root guitar player Petr, Blackie‘ Hosek. In 2000 he was guest tour drummer for Melancholy Pessimism, then continued with Root singer, Jirí, Bigboss‘ Valter, in his project BigBoss. In 2001 Marthus was enlisted by Pandemia and set out on a European tour.
By 2003, Marthus had joined Equirhodont and Galactic Industry, as well as doing studio and live sessions with multiple bands of various genres. In the summer of 2004 he was back into the studio, filming his drumming DVD MarthusMusic Vol.1. Then he was in England, to play with legendary Venom guitarist Jeff, Mantas‘ Dunn in the band Mantas (now Dryll). Along with his collaboration with Mantas, in 2005 Marthus started working with Czech power/speed/symphonic metal band Symphonity (formerly Nemesis), recording tracks for their Voice from the Silence album, then went back into the studio to film Marthusmusic Vol 2.
Later that year he left Mantas to drum with Cradle of Filth, who immediately embarked on a European tour. At the end of the band‘s Thornography tour, Marthus went into the studio with Cradle to record the album Godspeed on The Devil‘s Thunder, before packing up and heading out with the band on a world tour. Since then it has been non-stop for Marthus, as his mix of musical diversity, speed, precision and power see him making his new inroads into the hearts and minds of Metal fans around the world.
