Biography

Gábor Dörnyei was born December 17, 1977 in Szeged, southern Hungary. He began playing the drums at the age of 12, joining his first band by 13. As a young teen, he began playing in a number of local bands and practicing in downtown rock clubs, which led to playing local concerts and national festivals. In 1995 Gábor played on his first CD recording, Gozero: Lánc-lánc Eszterlánc. By the age of 17, he already taught a number of music students, something he continues to do to this day. Gábor also started taking classes from Péter Szendofi in Budapest. Szendofi’s enthusiasm and discipline had an enormous influence on Gábor’s career.

Shortly after meeting Szendofi, Gábor had the chance to play the Budapest Congress Hall Drummers Gala joining Steve Smith on stage. This was his first professional show in Hungary. In 1997 he got a taste of International touring, traveling to Germany, Austria, France and Switzerland. Immediately upon his return, he received a call to travel to the Bahamas for another tour. He was only 20 years old.

In 1999, Gábor found himself living in Budapest, touring Hungary with Tamás Hevesi, and recording for the Piccolo Theater. He also joined the band Crystal, which went on to win a Golden Record and a Golden Giraffe Award. Two years later he released his first multimedia CD. His percussive style of drumming was quickly evolving and the record was very well received, leading to drum workshops all around Hungary. It was around this time that Gábor was approached by SABIAN to become an endorser. To mark the occasion, he played the Atrium Hyatt Hotel in Budapest with drum workshop legend Dom Famularo. Walt Disney also came calling to have Gábor play on a number of recordings, and he has played for them ever since.

In 2002, Gábor finally formed his own band, the Dörnyei Gábor Trio, with Miklós Birta on guitar and György Frey on bass. The trio later evolved into a Quartet with Áron Romhányi on keyboards, and Csepregi Gyula often sits in on saxophone and flute.

Some memorable highlights from Gábor’s career include being the first Hungarian artist to play the Drummers' Festival in Karlsruhe, Germany; winning the Golden Drumstick Award in Hungary’s 2004 Drummers Gala; playing with István Lerch in his 50’th Symphony in the Budapest Congress Center; and an invitation to join Hungarian National Radio as the drummer for legendary band Studio 11, listened to by hundreds of thousands of people worldwide.

In recent years, Gábor joined pop trio Adagio, playing on their platinum-selling second album. He continues presenting drum percussion concerts and workshops with Kornél Horváth. And a second solo album, featuring 17 top jazz players was released to great reviews.
